I was with C Company in Qui Nhon and continued with them to Da Nang.. In Qui Nhon I was there when sappers blew up the Ammo Dump across the road. I was dispatched to a prison camp for a short time to teach prisoners to make cement blocks. Then back to the Prefab yard at Camp Williams. I grabbed every opportunity to ride Shotgun on any Convoy I could get on. In Da Nang I was there on the beach when the Marine Chinook went down in the South China Sea and helped to pull the bodies out of the water. we were stationed right beneath Marble Mountain and Received Mortar fire every night.

I transferred to C Company where I was an 830M operator until we moved out to the ammo dump. I was then converted from SP5 to SGT and was a heavy equipment squad leader. I stayed in and retired in April 1978 and now live near Birmingham, Alabama. Agent Orange caught up to me and I had surgery for lung cancer in Nov. 2009. doing OK.

I went from AIT Training to 84th Engr then located at Ft Ord CA. We were then deployed to Viet Nam in May, 1965. We went by sea and the ship broke down in the middle of the Pacific. We were towed 500 miles to another ship and arrived in June, 1965. The American public was told in September, 1965 that we were going to war. I was a heavy equipment operator and operated a earth mover machine called a scraper. We built hospitals, roads, heliports and dirt airstrips. They kept us busy.

We were located at the battalion headquarters in Qui Nhon and worked on several of the top 10 engineer construction projects in Vietnam during my tour. Projects included Highway QL-1 and other road construction, land clearing, bypasses and floating bridge for blown bridges, POL tank farms, ammunition depot and marine off loading facility, airfield, POL pipelines, and artillery fire base. Served as a forward artillery observer and demolitions officer for our battalion forces in Qui Nhon.
