I went in country July 5 1970 and left July 4 1971. My first six months were spent in Qui Non. Then the last six months were in Da Nang. I volunteered for assignments outside of the compound regularly. I wish I could remember my partner in crime on those assignments. During the last last three months of my assignment all engeneer ballalions had been called back home. The companies left behind in Viet Nam were called United States Engeneer Command Viet Nam with a different patch.
Sometime around the 23rd of June in 1971 while in DaNang we had incoming and one of the guys got hit. We were assigned by the beach. I'm wondering if anyone knows who that was and where I can reach him if possible.

Came to Fort Ord from AIT at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. Was assigned to the 84th Eng. Bn (Const) on or around Sept 1964. Helped pack up the Bn. For movement to Vietnam. Left port on or about 12 May 1965 and took 31 days to reach Vietnam. Lost 2 days in Guam to change ships due to breakdowns on the Eltinge. Loaded on to the Barnett for the remainder of the trip. Off loaded onto the beach in Gui Nohn harbor by the army LCM 1099 company on or about the 13th of June 1965. (29 days of being seasick took it's toll on me to say the least.) Set up base camp in the sand and proceed to take the top off the mountain to fill in the sand to build our base camp. Continued construction on new structure after quarters were built that was to be our EM club. After all the work, the 85th Med was to take over our compound because of the area being more secure and we moved our unit to Phu Thi valley and ran our operations from there. I was initially assigned as a rock crusher operator but was given the job as potable water truck driv

hank.mary@centurytel.netArrived in A co. late in August of '69 at Tuy Hoa. After all of my heavy equipment maintenance training in AIT I was expecting to be a mechanic. The first question I was asked was 'can you type'. When I responded yes I became the new mailman/courier/training NCO and who knows what else. I remember that the guy who was doing that job was happy to see me. If I remember right it was sp/4 Hamblin. Moved north with the rest of the company to Quin Nhon. Would like to hear from any one I was lucky enough to serve with.

I arrived in country at Long Ben and subsequently transported to "A" Company 84th Engineers in Quinon. During which,I worked in the supply unit until the radio operator left. I volunteered to take the radio operator's job until one was obtained. It was several months later a radio operator joined the unit. At that time I went back to my old job. I also lived on the mountain for weeks on end. I also was involved in transports of equipment and supplies up to Danang Airfield. So much for being a Engineer Parts Supply Specialist, 76P20.

My duties with headquarters platoon were radioman & parttime mailman when needed. I replaced Jerry Meirinck when he left. At the time we were in Phu Tai thence we moved to Thuy Hoa. I was gone for awhile because I went home to bury my father, but when I returned the company was still in Phu Tai. I remember Paul Bylin cause we got drunk my first night with the company. Unfortunately I can remember faces but not names.

I was with HQ . was motor sgt for HQ and A company, monitored maint at phu bai rock quarry. helped built the dune buggy . the dune buggy pictures took me by surprise . when I left in 1971 the old buggy looked much better. Short story when I scrounged the parts ( jeep body engine and transmission we loaded everything on a low bed and trucked to the machine shop the 3rd shop at that time was not involved in the build . the engine and trans came from a salvage yard in the Danang area. the engine and trans came from an M113. when I made my trips there which was often we always used a wrecker and a low bed never knowing what treasure we might come across . Any way the machinist and I jumped started the motor on the ground and we cheered. Soon after we configure a clutch mechanism and hydraulics to make the transmission to work inline without a transfer case , that was a mind bender several clutch kits and some ingenious welding it started coming together . we used a wrecked M151 body and pieced everything together . the fuel system consisted of 2 electric fuel pumps and 2 jeep carburetors. We were of to the beach . After a few shake downs runs on the beach the BN Commander did not appreciate our spirit when we woke him from his slumber .We were told in so many words to get rid of it or make it useful . we were undaunted and tossed a set of welding tanks on it and used it for a contact truck between units in the rear. So that is the story and Im sticking to it . I am sorry I can't remember names its been 45 years .My shop was straight across from third shop .Man we worked on any thing and everything ,well drillers and rock drills and crushers . Any was thanks for the memories.
